Joint master in Alpine Ecology Alpine ecology is an academic field focusing on how abiotic and biotic factors affect the distribution and dynamics of species and populations in alpine environments. Why Alpine Ecology? The study will provide students with a better and broader understanding of present and future challenges and threats that alpine environments are facing. Through lectures and fieldwork/laboratory exercises students will acquire the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to initiate sustainable management and conservation strategies in alpine areas, and to do so in accordance with ethical and scientific guidelines. The ecology and management practices of alpine ecosystems in Norway (boreal) and Slovakia (temperate) will be highlighted. The study program consists of various courses comprising in total 60 ECTS and a Master’s thesis (60 ECTS).

Teaching is largely based on one-week modules, and laboratory and field-oriented teaching. It provides a flexible study program and places high demands on student’s ability to work independently. Combining theory and practice is central throughout the program. This will provide students with necessary theoretical knowledge as well as practical experience required for employment or further studies.

The Master thesis is based on an independent study under the supervision of Professors. Further study opportunities Students who graduate from this program can move on to Ph.D. Programs in environmental science, ecology and similar fields of research.
